Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and aid for persons who require help with things such as mobility or bathing. Assisted living communities frequently offer opportunities for social activity, care supervision, and help with daily activities. In some situations, communities may offer respite, Alzheimer’s care, or continuing care. Wisconsin has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. Staff members receive training in a variety of areas. These areas include standard precautions, needs assessment of prospective residents, community policies and procedures, and medication management. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident-specific services, independent living skills, including personal care, and leisure time activities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
