Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides care, supervision, and aid to self-sufficient seniors who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually provide support with the activities of daily life, opportunities for leisurely activity, and aid with appointments and transportation. In certain situations, communities may provide skilled nursing, respite, or dementia care. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) supervises this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as level of personal care needs, preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , and mental illness. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident self-administration of medication, medication administration provided through nurse delegation, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include promote each resident's health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, communities choose to provide certain health support services, general responsibility for each resident, and assistance with ADLs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, and practitioner. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program--Community Options Program Entry System (COPES). Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: continuing education, First-aid and CPR, nurse delegation and core diabetes, and safety training (3 hours).
