Assisted living communities offer oversight, personal care, and social events to people who are around 65 years old. The services provided often include help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, hospice, or dementia care. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has specific rules related to this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, medication administration provided through nurse delegation, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, assistance with ADLs, general responsibility for each resident, and administration of health care treatments. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, and practitioner. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include specialty training, safety training (3 hours), orientation (2 hours), and HIV/AIDS. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as level of personal care needs, mental illness, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , and significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).
