Assisted living communities offer apartment style housing and social events as well as individual help. The types of service provided often involve help with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, dementia care, or skilled nursing. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has specific statutes related to this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general responsibility for each resident, assistance with ADLs, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, and communities choose to provide certain health support services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental illness, activities and service preferences, level of personal care needs, and an initial comprehensive exam including medical history . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, and practitioner. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, and resident self-administration of medication. Staff must obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: specialty training, nurse delegation and core diabetes, continuing education, and HIV/AIDS.
