Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers aid, supervision, and support to healthy persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services provided often include assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select cases, communities may provide hospice, nursing care, or respite. Tennessee maintains specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities governs this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with health services, physical assessment, recreational and social activities, and arrangements for visits by or to health care providers. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, and the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident while taking medication, reminding residents to take their medications, and assistance with reading labels. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program.In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include responsibility for the safety of the resident when in the community, the ability and readiness to intervene if crises arise, laundry services, and personal services such as protective care. Staff members obtain training in a variety of areas. These areas include nutrition, financial management, applicable state rules and regulations, and healthy lifestyles.
