Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer oversight, healthcare, and social events to people around 65 years of age or older. The services provided often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some cases, communities may offer hospice, respite, or “aging in place”. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . Alabama maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards certifies this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination by a physician prior to admission and plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include coordination of medical transportation, social activities, laundry, and housekeeping. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must serve daily at least three meals, Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal, Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets, and meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: fire and environmental safety, Administrators must complete 6 hours of continuing education each year, 19 years of age, and basic first-aid.
