Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and aid to people who require help with things such as dressing or showering. Assisted living communities usually offer help with daily activities, supervision of care, and chances for social activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, respite, or hospice. The state of Tennessee maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities supervises this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, and the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with health services, recreational and social activities, arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, and physical assessment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, personal services such as protective care, responsibility for the safety of the resident when in the community, and dietary services. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include fire safety disaster preparedness, nutrition, emergency procedures, and food service. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-administer medication, observing the resident while taking medication, and assistance with reading labels. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program.
