Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer oversight, personal care, and social interaction to individuals who are around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities commonly provide help with daily activities, help with transit and appointments, and opportunities for recreational activity. In select cases, communities may provide hospice, respite, or “aging in place”. Oregon has specific regulations related to this type of community. Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Licensing and Regulatory Oversight supervises this type of community. Staff must receive education in a number of fields. These areas include infection control, residents’ rights, abuse and reporting requirements, and emergency procedures. Public assistance is available through Medicaid Aged and Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include 24-hour emergency care service, assist psychosocial wellbeing, maximize physical functioning, and health services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all food must be in accordance with the Department of Agriculture food pyramid and must provide three meals a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental health evaluation, ADLs test, physical health exam, and risk indicator assessment.
