Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides assistance, support, and supervision to medically stable individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. The services offered often include support with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select cases, communities may offer dementia care, skilled nursing, or hospice. The state of Oregon has specific rules related to this kind of community. Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Licensing and Regulatory Oversight supervises this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid Aged and Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assist psychosocial wellbeing, maximize physical functioning, transportation services, and 24-hour emergency care service. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all food must be in accordance with the Department of Agriculture food pyramid and must provide three meals a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental health evaluation, risk indicator assessment, physical health exam, and ADLs test. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include abuse and reporting requirements, infection control, residents’ rights, and emergency procedures.
