An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides supervision, assistance, and support to medically stable individuals who do not need skilled nursing services. The types of service provided often include assistance with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may offer skilled nursing, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. The state of Ohio maintains specific rules related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observation, handing medications to resident, and verifying labels. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, activities, assistance with self-administration of medication, and medication administration. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: community procedures, job responsibilities, residents rights, and securing emergency assistance. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, health history, psychological history, and psychical history.
