An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, assistance, and support to self-sufficient individuals who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with the activities of daily life, aid with transit and appointments, and chances for organized activity. In some cases, communities may provide hospice, respite, or continuing care. In New Hampshire, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $72,000 . The state of New Hampshire maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-direct administration of medications, staff may not physically handle the medication, and staff may place containers within reach. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of residents with cognitive deficits, assistance arranging medical/dental appointments, health/safety services, and social/recreational activities. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a nursing assessment and assessment by a trained assessor. There must be one bath or shower for every 6 residents and one toilet for every 6 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: duties/responsibilities, nutrition, first aid, and characteristics of residents’ disabilities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, provide three or more meals a day, and provide snacks between meals and before bed.
