Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment-style housing and social events as well as individualized care. Assisted living communities often offer support with daily activities, aid with appointments and transportation, and opportunities for organized activity. In some situations, communities may offer “aging in place”, dementia care, or nursing. In New Hampshire, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $72,000 . The state of New Hampshire maintains specific rules related to this kind of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration licenses this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a nursing assessment and assessment by a trained assessor. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 6 residents and one toilet for every 6 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication services, health/safety services, assistance arranging medical/dental appointments, and social/recreational activities. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include basic hygiene, resident plan of care, infection control, and aging. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may not physically handle the medication, staff may observe and record medication side effects, and staff may place containers within reach. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide snacks between meals and before bed, all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, provide three or more meals a day, and staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements.
