Assisted living communities administer healthcare, oversight, and social interaction to people who are around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities commonly provide outings for recreational activity, care supervision, and assistance with transit and appointments. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide snacks between meals and before bed, all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, and provide three or more meals a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include the community may remind residents to take medication, residents may self-direct administration of medications, and staff may observe and record medication side effects. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment by a trained assessor and a nursing assessment. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include medication management, resident plan of care, residents’ rights, and dental care.
