According to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data, the average starting rent that families and seniors pay for Henderson assisted living communities in 2023 was $3,715 per month.[01] Starting rent only reflects the price of rent, but it doesn’t reflect extras like pet rent or any add-ons. Henderson assisted living communities are typically less expensive per month than nearby cities like Las Vegas.

Assisted living monthly costs may include some or all of the following services and amenities bundled into rent:

  • Standard personal care services, such as assistance with daily living activities

How people pay for assisted living in Henderson

Let’s guide you through payment options that families typically use to cover their ideal assisted living community costs. These options start with personal income sources, which can sometimes be combined with other senior benefits like Social Security, Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits, Medicare, and Medicaid. Use this section to learn what may apply to your family’s situation, browse application resources, and create a combination of resources that works best for your family.

Private pay methods

Most seniors and their families look to their personal income sources first to cover costs of their ideal assisted living situation. Sources such as investment returns, saving accounts, Social Security benefits, pensions, and the options below are typical ways seniors pay for assisted living:

Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits
23862

Approximate number of veterans who currently live in Henderson

Approximately 51% of Henderson veterans are over the age of 65

Seniors should check the VA’s list of service-connected disabilities to see what might apply to their situations. They should also consult with a veterans benefit advisor to learn what VA benefits they’re eligible for. Many senior veterans and their surviving spouses may be eligible for benefits that could help cover their assisted living costs, but they aren’t always aware of what’s available.

Seniors with disabilities from active service who are enrolled in VA health care may be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit. This benefit is typically the most generous option for senior veterans or their surviving spouses. It provides monthly payments in addition to their VA pension to cover the cost of anything that improves their quality of life, like monthly assisted living costs.

We recommend contacting a local veterans service officer at a local veterans service organization (VSO), even if you think you or your loved one might not qualify for veterans benefits. Let a local VA-vetted veterans service officer guide you through the overwhelming process. They’re equipped to help veterans or their spouses understand eligibility, and to make sure veterans get the most out of their potential benefits.

The following resources and contact details can help Henderson veterans make the first steps towards applying for potential benefits:

  • Contact with the Veterans Advocacy and Support Team (or VAST) Las Vegas to connect with southern Nevada veterans service officers near Henderson.
  • Communicate with veterans service officers online through the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (or NDVS).
  • Visit the Henderson Vet Center for confidential health services and benefits assistance at no cost.

Medicaid

Nevada Medicaid is the state’s Medicaid program that provides health care insurance to Henderson residents of low-income status. Though Medicaid doesn’t cover rent at a private assisted living facility, some care services may be covered through senior-specific waiver programs or long term services and support waiver programs. These Medicaid waiver programs enable recipients to receive care services in their current place of residence, as long as it’s a residential or community setting.

One senior-specific program is the Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) Assisted Living Waiver. This waiver may cover the costs of daily personal care services, such as assistance with feeding and personal hygiene. The Home and Community Based Services Waiver for the Frail Elderly is another Nevada Medicaid waiver designed to help seniors avoid a move into a long-term care facility. In order to benefit from this waiver, seniors have to be eligible for Nevada Medicaid.

Nevada also has a Dual Eligible Special Needs Program (or D-SNP) for seniors enrolled in both Nevada Medicaid and Medicare. D-SNP coordinates coverage from both programs to help eligible seniors get the most from their benefits.

For assistance with applying for Nevada Medicaid, begin by reaching out to local resources:

  • Nevada Medicaid’s “Peace of Mind” brochure is offered by the state’s Division of Welfare and Supportive Services (DWSS). It’s a good place to start to learn more about the enrollment process.
  • Check out the Nevada Medicare Assistance Program (MAP) for guidance and additional support in accessing different programs.
  • Contact the Nevada long-term care ombudsman to assist you with community resources and benefits access.
  • Contact Nevada Aging and Disability Services to learn about the state’s long-term care services.
  • Dial 2-1-1 or visit Nevada 211’s website to learn about local senior services.

Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program that may cover medically necessary care costs. Review each part of Medicare below to see what may be covered:[03]

  • Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, some in-home health care, hospice care, and rehabilitation services.
  • Medicare Part B covers some doctors’ appointments, preventive services, outpatient care, and medical supplies.
  • Medicare Part D covers some prescription medications and vaccines.

For assistance with Medicare benefits, we recommend you first reach out to the Clark County Social Security Administration Office, and then reach out to any of the following resources:

  • Contact the local long-term care ombudsman for additional benefit assistance.
  • Nevada Medicare Assistance Program (or MAP) is another helpful option.
  • Nevada also has a State Health Insurance Assistance Program (or SHIP) that provides Medicare counseling services and eligibility information.

Understand Nevada laws and regulations for Henderson assisted living facilities

Learning about Nevada’s assisted living regulations can help you choose a Henderson community you’re comfortable with. Use the information below to help you find licensed assisted living facilities in Henderson that follow local laws, adhere to regulations, and can safely meet you or your loved one’s needs.

Licensing and grading system

Assisted living facilities in Nevada must be licensed under the category of Residential Facilities for Groups by the Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance (HCQC). The license ensures each community provides qualified senior care. This fact sheet on Residential Facilities for Groups summarizes the standards of these assisted living communities in Nevada, as outlined by the HCQC.

Nevada’s Division of Public and Behavioral Health ranks residential facilities with an inspection-based grading system. Inspectors note concerns on staff and safety with the following grades:[04]

  • An assisted living facility with an “A” grade has either minimal or no concerns.
  • Those with a “B” grade have multiple concerns or issues with their administration that may cause harm to residents if left unaddressed.
  • To earn a “C” or “D” grade, an assisted living facility must have several issues with their administration, concerns that have already caused harm to residents, or both. After receiving a “C” or “D” grade, the facility must be reinspected until it receives an “A” or “B” grade.

Residential support requirements

Assisted living communities must meet seniors’ evolving needs and reduce the likelihood that they’ll need to move to another community. These communities are also required to foster their residents’ independence. Therefore, assisted living facilities in Nevada are not allowed to admit residents that are bedridden, require restraint, or require 24-hour skilled nursing care. The exception to this rule is if the senior qualifies for HCQC-approved hospice care.[05]

Room requirements

Senior residents’ rooms must be at least 80 square feet for a private room. In a shared room, there must be at least 60 square feet of floor space for each senior resident. Shared rooms can’t have more than three residents.[06]

Caregiving staff

Nevada assisted living facilities with over 20 residents need at least one employee on-site who’s awake at all times. Caregivers must be at least 18 years old and complete care-related training, such as CPR and first aid. If the facility provides memory care, staff should receive specialized memory care training on Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.[06]

The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (or DHHS) inspects each Residential Care Facility for Groups before it’s licensed. These facilities are also inspected after a complaint has been filed. You can find public inspection reports in Nevada’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Provider Search Form. To navigate this search form, select “Health Facilities” under the Business Unit search criteria, select “Residential Facility for Groups” under the Credential Type criteria, then enter the name and the address of the facility you would like to learn about.

Types of care at Henderson assisted living communities

In Henderson, 83% of the assisted living communities in A Place for Mom’s network provide multiple senior living options all on one campus. For instance, an assisted living facility may also have on-site memory care and independent living wings. These communities tend to be larger and offer an array of service and amenity options all in one place. This helps to connect seniors with different needs, leading to a greater number of relationships.

The remainder of Henderson assisted living communities in A Place for Mom’s network are in stand-alone facilities or residential care homes. These options house smaller numbers of seniors and offer a more intimate setting, whether it’s an apartment-style building or a homelike environment. Because these communities are smaller, they typically only offer one type of senior care. However, care services may be more tailored to each individual as the environment can be more personal. These communities are sometimes preferred by seniors overwhelmed by the idea of moving into a larger, more populous community.
