Assisted living facilities provide residential living communities and health care to seniors who might require a helping hand with things such as dressing or taking medication. Services offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In some situations, facilities may offer skilled nursing, dementia care, or respite. The state of Nebraska has specific regulations related to this kind of facility. Nebraska Division of Public Health, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Licensure and Regulation governs this type of facility. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must offer written menus based on federal nutrition standards, monitor for nutritional problems on specified weight changes, and provide adequate food services. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with personal care, assistance with self-administration of medications, supportive services, and assistance with Adls. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as services for residents with special needs and services provided by the facility: how often, when and by who. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: social services, rules/regulations/standards for operating an ALF, gerontology, and administration. Public assistance is available through Government assistance is covered through two Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs..
