Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and health care to seniors who need a helping hand with self-administering medication or washing. Services provided often involve assistance with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, respite, or nursing care. The state of Nebraska maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. Nebraska Division of Public Health, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Licensure and Regulation certifies this community type. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 6 residents. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These include: resident care/services, financial management, rules/regulations/standards for operating an ALF, and social services. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include housekeeping/laundry, case management, behavioral management, and health maintenance activities. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as services for residents with special needs and services provided by the community: how often, when and by who. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide adequate food services, monitor for nutritional problems on specified weight changes, and must offer written menus based on federal nutrition standards. Public assistance is available through Government assistance is covered through two Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs..
