Assisted living communities provide supervision, social interaction, and healthcare to people who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently offer supervision of care, chances for organized activity, and help with the activities of daily life. In certain instances, communities may provide skilled nursing, “aging in place”, or dementia care. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . The state of Michigan has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervised personal care, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, and guidance. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: safety and fire prevention, staff training program based on the home’s program statement, reporting requirements and documentation, and supervision. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and medication supervision and administration. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
