An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides support, assistance, and supervision to healthy individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The services offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some situations, communities may provide continuing care, dementia care, or skilled nursing. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . The state of Michigan has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and medication supervision and administration. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include guidance, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, supervised personal care, and assisting a resident to keep appointments. Staff must obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: personal care, administration of medication, reporting requirements and documentation, and safety and fire prevention. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, and The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.
