Assisted living communities provide social events, personal care, and supervision to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The types of service offered often involve aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In certain situations, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or nursing. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . Michigan has specific rules related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and medication supervision and administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, supervised personal care, assisting a resident to keep appointments, and reminding resident of important activities to be carried out. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These areas include first-aid, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, residents rights and responsibilities, and supervision. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
