Assisted living communities offer apartment style housing and social events as well as personalized care. Assisted living communities often provide help with appointments and transportation, chances for leisurely activity, and assistance with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, “aging in place”, or Alzheimer’s care. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . The state of Michigan has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses certifies this type of community. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These include: containment of infectious disease, staff training program based on the home’s program statement, first-aid, and personal care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisting a resident to keep appointments, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, medication management, and guidance. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, medication supervision and administration, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications.
