In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland maintains specific standards related to this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene licenses this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be well-balanced, meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be varied, and programs must provide three meals a day and snacks. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, and assistance in accessing and coordinating health services. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, and physical assistance to open and remove medications from a container. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as problematic behaviors, the assessment must be reviewed every 6 months, treatment requirements, and risk factor management needs. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: their individual job requirements, the use of service plans, residents’ rights, and Managers of programs licensed for five or more residents must complete 20 hours of Department-approved continuing education every 2 years.
