Assisted living communities offer social opportunities, oversight, and care to people around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often involve help with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select instances, communities may provide dementia care, respite, or nursing care. In Louisiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $43,800 . The state of Louisiana maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Hospitals, Health Standards Section supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan must be revised when a resident’s condition or preferences change, The service plan must include the scope of services that will be provided to meet the resident’s needs, pre-admission appraisal, and assessment of the resident’s needs and preferences. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health related services that accommodate individual resident’s changing needs and preferences, assisted living services, health-related services that encourage family and community involvement, and health-related services that are designed to allow the individual to reside in the least restrictive setting of his/her choice. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: instruction in the specific responsibilities of each employee’s job, training in resident care services, supervisory/management techniques, and procedures for and legal requirements concerning the reporting of abuse and critical incidents.
