An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers support, care, and supervision to self-sufficient persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities often offer opportunities for recreational activity, aid with transportation and appointments, and assistance with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In Kentucky, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $41,958 . Kentucky has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include scheduled social activities determined by resident preferences, shopping, transportation, and personal care services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include no provisions identified. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These include: the aging process, orientation within 90 days of hire, Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, and adult first-aid. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 5. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through state Assistance programs for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include storing the medication in a manner that is accessible to the resident, reminding the resident to take medications, and communicating with the resident’s physician and pharmacy for prescriptions. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated to meet the ongoing needs of the resident and functional needs assessment.
