Assisted living communities provide healthcare, social opportunities, and oversight to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly offer aid with the activities of daily life, supervision of care, and help with transportation and appointments. In certain instances, communities may provide hospice, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $7,604 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $6,905 . The state of Kentucky maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as functional needs assessment and assessment must be updated to meet the ongoing needs of the resident. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include shopping, self-administration of medications, chores, and laundry. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include no provisions identified. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include orientation within 90 days of hire, the aging process, Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, and adult abuse and neglect . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening the dosage packaging or medication container, communicating with the resident’s physician and pharmacy for prescriptions, and confirming that medication is being taken by the resident for whom it is prescribed. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 5. Public assistance is available through state Assistance programs for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
