Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, assistance, and support to self-sufficient individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. The types of service offered often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In certain instances, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or respite. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. The state of Indiana has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. Indiana State Department of Health regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Medications may be administered under physician’s order by licensed nursing personnel or qualified medication aides, preparation of prescribed medications, and resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified. Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation must be updated at least semi-annually or when a significant change in condition occurs, community will identify scope of care based on evaluation, A comprehensive assessment, and a negotiated risk plan will be established. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three meals a day, communities must consider residents’ reasonable religious preferences, meals must provide a balanced distribution of the daily nutritional requirements, and communities must meet daily dietary requirements and requests. communities must consider residents’ personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident’s room Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: first-aid, including evacuation procedures, 40 hours of continuing education every 2 years, and resident’s rights. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include identifying responses to actual or potential health conditions, activities and programs appropriate to residents’ abilities and interests, executing a minor regimen based upon a nursing diagnosis or as prescribed by a physician, physician’s assistant, chiropractor, dentist, optometrist, podiatrist, or nurse practitioner, and scheduled transportation for community-based activities.
