Assisted Living

An assisted living facility is an organized living community which offers aid, support, and care to healthy seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. The types of service provided often include assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select instances, facilities may offer hospice, respite, or continuing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of facility. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of facility. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include facilities must provide three daily meals. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of self-administered medications, medication reminders, assistance with activities of daily living, and non-medical services. The minimum number of residents for this facility type is 3. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. Staff must obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: disaster procedures, job responsibilities and limitations, reporting, and internal policies. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident's psychosocial condition, evaluation of a prospective resident's cognitive condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident's representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, supervision of self-administered medications, and observing the resident.
