Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, aid, and support to medically stable persons who do not need skilled nursing support. The types of service provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, Alzheimer's care, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has specific rules related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include non-medical services, laundry, medication reminders, and emergency response systems. Staff must obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include self-determination, internal policies, reporting, and confidentiality. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident, supervision of self-administered medications, and medication reminders. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident's cognitive condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident's representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident's psychosocial condition.
