Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides care, supervision, and support to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing care. The types of service offered often involve help with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, dementia care, or continuing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident's cognitive condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident's psychosocial condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident's representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of self-administered medications, non-medical services, laundry, and assistance with activities of daily living. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These areas include internal policies, neglect prevention, residents' need and service plans, and disaster procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication reminders, supervision of self-administered medications, and reading the medication label to residents.
