Assisted Living

An assisted living facility is a residential living community which provides aid, care, and support to independent individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living facilities frequently offer help with transit and appointments, opportunities for social activity, and supervision of care. In some cases, facilities may provide hospice, "aging in place", or dementia care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of facility. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates this type of facility. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include facilities must provide three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident's psychosocial condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident's representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident's cognitive condition. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this facility type is 3. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, medication reminders, assistance with activities of daily living, and security. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, supervision of self-administered medications, and only a licensed health care professional employed by the facility may administer medications. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These include: choice, job responsibilities and limitations, promotion of dignity, and privacy.
