Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers aid, care, and supervision to independent seniors who do not require skilled nursing support. The types of service provided often include help with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, reading the medication label to residents, and observing the resident. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include security, housekeeping, medication administration, and laundry. Staff members obtain training in a variety of areas. These areas include privacy, confidentiality, neglect prevention, and abuse. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition.
