Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social events as well as individual support. Services offered often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing care, respite, or hospice. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this community type. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, assistance with activities of daily living , and nursing services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include universal precautions, reporting incidents, community sanitation procedures, and community emergency procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and medical examination report. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication.
