Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer social opportunities, healthcare, and supervision to persons who are on average 65 years of age or older. The types of service offered often include assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or continuing care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident's status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and communities must document such assessment. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents' food habits, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident's health care provider for residents who require special diets, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident's hand, opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication, and reading the label. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include universal precautions, providing assistance with activities of daily living, community emergency procedures, and reporting incidents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, and personal care services.
