Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individualized support. The services offered often involve aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, and meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. Staff members receive training in a number of subjects. These include: Administrators must complete 40 hours of continuing education units every 2 years, residents’ rights, skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care, and knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
