An assisted living community is a residential community which offers aid, supervision, and care to healthy seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually provide care supervision, aid with the activities of daily life, and aid with appointments and transit. In certain cases, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, nursing care, or hospice. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination by a physician prior to admission and plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include coordination of medical transportation, social activities, ADL assistance, and laundry.
