Sunrise of Old Tappan has been relatively easy to work with so far!
At this point, I would recommend them to others. It's a bit early to give a recommendation. However, I had a loved one that was there two years ago and we were happy with her care, so we returned for another loved one. Time will tell if things are the same or not.

Sunrise of Old Tappan, located in northern New Jersey, just 30 miles from Manhattan, offers assisted living, memory care, respite care and coordination of hospice care to seniors in Bergen County, Rockland County, and New York City.
Oakes Park, located directly adjacent to our community, is a beautiful local park where residents can sit in the gazebo and enjoy fresh air and the sounds of the surrounding neighborhood, including the summer evening concerts sponsored by the Town of Old Tappan. Students from the Old Tappan High School can often be found coordinating the Men's Club activities, playing Wii with our residents or caroling at the holidays.

My tour review
This community was very similar to another community that I was looking at. I had a connection with an executive director at another community and this just made me go a different direction. They have some good amenities for the residents just was another community that shined more.

As close to home as you can get
This is a beautiful small community. It is smaller than other communities but the staff seem to care and there is a lot of people there. My loved one has a lot of needs and they are able to take care of everything that she needs and is always right there. My loved one is really taken care of well here. It is never going to be her home but I have bought a lot of things to make it homey. My loved one feels like she is on vacation all the time and she is not struggling any more and this means a lot.

A good place but a bit expensive.
It's a good place, and I would recommend it. There are some issues with the cost. I think for someone who needs the care, it's okay. But it's very pricey. Our loved one didn't need a lot of services, so it wasn't too bad, but if you add on care needs, it becomes quite pricey. I thought the place was clean and well maintained. There was adequate space, although his room could have been a tad bigger. But the bathroom was a good size, especially if you have any type of handicap. The facility itself was excellent. And my loved one liked the food overall as well.

Our family had an in person tour and the tour was just okay, they were very cryptic when explaining their different levels of care. They didn't feel very trust worthy and we felt we would get nickel and dimed for everything. It is a nice facility, but also the medical management was twice as much as any other community we had looked at.

We are allowed to visit but at the moment it is only window visits. So far the staff members have been fantastic and they have been extremely good about getting in touch with us constantly with updated on our loved one. Also, from our understanding they have not had any covid cases.

Unprofessional Unkind and Run by Aides . in Fear
This assisted living of Old Tappan is a reminder of how old closed nursing homes were run. There are No activities of substance. a very rude and non caring staff-which is understaffed . The premise at 7 30 is everyone quiet in your rooms. -it seems liked many are sedated. Unlike other senior living communities . there is like Age is Only a number. Age is to be respected Run by AIDES ONLY and some woman at the desk The director is very rude , at times very disrespectful We had our rlative loved one there and came home for a show and dinner -it was after 8 PM and a medication aide was angry that it was LATE and had to let us IN . it is home. There are NO activities of substance one aide [name removed] is so harsh with women .. angry and cannot even speak to any topic of interest. again rude the key aide giver has no grasp . and cannot deal with anyting this is NOT her way or the [name removed]'s way the director YOU never hear laughter .. angry Nursing is unheard ...the medical Staff a Dr. [name removed] is not an advocate of Seniors and Wellness ..so it is Best to Go to our own doctor We will consider transferring Aging is not about being an OLD person in FEAR or keep quiet LIfe is to be Lived The Director nor staff accommodate that Gift .

Very threatening and sad
Our family experience at Sunrise of Old Tappan was tragic as well as met with hostility, disrespect and denial of dignity and medical care. Under the direction of [name removed] and reporting concerns of negligence -for example not allowing my father to have hearing aids or go out to eye specialist with a Sunrise MD supporting such senile of care . and expressing concern [name removed] retaliated against me for such advocacy for my poor 93 year old father with a Law suit against me. I am a clinician and in health care and having worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering IN NYC i come with experience and compassion Her methods of hostility to include yelling. slamming down phones when merely asking for help for my parents was a complete shock-as if aging parents is not sad enough , her treatment caused such pain and stress to the point of fear-which was termed also by my parents My mother had advanced lung disease which was very hard for her she was left without clinical care and once I was able to over ride the complaints to NOT to take her to the hospital by the [name removed] and Her nurse .. EMS in town were so helpful and took my mother to Valley hospital for a week stay saving her life Sunrise the day of Admission with [name removed] and a [name removed] both financial . stated I had no right to da that Well I do believe all have a right to LIFE the next time .. the nurse and MD along with the eldest son stated NO medical care wait Such wait yielded my mother to end up in ICU and she died 10 days later My father is not being isolated and denied socialization ..after losing his wife of 63 years the STAFF is short staffed during evening there are NO LPN or Nurses for care to supervise and aids have very often yelled at my father as well as me for merely asking as he is Profoundly hard of hearing .. can you help him translate demented Your father cannot hear sick of this were many comment s There were two very kind aids in evening and thank God for them . they tried but fear of Job etc could only allow so much Comments of " we are not here to protect your father MY job is to protect Sunrise by lead care provider under Ms Varnum was so fearing As [name removed] Varnum continues to deny or attempt to deny my right of freedom o speech She also threatened that I am not allowed to review . IF my father is not protected from her and the eldest son he will succumb to this in his loss He is loving kind and denied any amount of love .. Ms varnum is perhaps the most hostile and abusive person i have met in over 36 years in health care. I do not recommend this assisted living there are other sunrise and assisted living that actually do so much to respect seniors i.e. Upper Saddle river . so very kind
even they did not get my father 's tech corrected so that the MDHoinkus and [name removed] have him on a baby food diet Yet when I visited i made soft chicken soup and high protein .. This is so very sad and threatening

Wonderful staff, friendly and attentive. Very clean establishment, well run, employees new all residents names when passed in a hallway. Menu look good, more of a at home feel. Lots of Frank Sinatra playing! Rooms were nice size and had kitchenettes.

staff working great but Lead care manager don't have a positive attitude they need more personal. When administration give the tour is look amazing place, is not real. During the tour I can see chair wet of the urine, the bathroom with the poor hygiene diaper dirty in the floor. in memory care people yelling screaming.

This community has a nice atmosphere.
The staff have been very nice and helpful. The residents are friendly. They offer a lot of activities and mom is starting to participate in some of them. The food is hit or miss on taste. This is an older smaller community and they keep it clean. I would recommend this community.

Great Care
Sunrise has a nice homie feel unlike his previous location which seemed more like a hotel than a home.
The food is ok but rather than spending a little time helping our family member review the menu or understand his choices they offer him what they think he will like.
This can lead to dissatisfaction. They do serve beer and wine with dinner which is great for an occasional drink and family and friends can participate in meal for a minimal charge.
The staff are very welcoming of our frequent drop ins at any time and we always find it clean, warm and friendly.
We would however, like more attention to detail when cleaning his private bathroom in his suite. They rely on him requesting it and with his deteriorating vision he is not seeing a need.
I think my single biggest complaint is the push to use OMNI care for all prescriptions. Our family member gets his medication through the VA so has no prescription insurance. They have very specific requirements about how his medication is packaged preferring the “OMNI care way”. It would literally cost us more than $1,500.00 per month more using OMNI care.
Perhaps with Prescription insurance this is not an issue but be sure to clear that up before moving in.
Rates are quoted daily as is the level of care costs which can sky rocket without you realizing it. If cost is no object I think you and your family member will be very satisfied. Staff are very friendly and try hard to accommodate all the personalities.
