  • A good choice for mom

We chose this community because it had a less institutional feel, it felt more like an apartment complex and we looked at quite a few. The food was very good, they had variety. The room sizes were nice sized. Our favorite part about this community was how welcoming it was. They have a wide front porch with rocking chairs out front where people were always sitting. We felt this was a safe place for mom.

I've been in a lot of senior living communities and this one does a really good job with keeping odors down. The maintenance team does a great job with keeping the community up both inside and out and is very responsive to requests. I know within a few days the staff knew my mother's first name and knew things about her. They do seem to be very attentive with the residents. They do have a lot of activities available for the residents but I don't necessarily think they meet the preferences of the residents. The exercise classes are also not very rigorous. The outings as well are not the best, mostly to the store and church and my mother does really like to go out. The only thing that we have run into at this community is that they do seem to nickle and dime us for everything. Because my mother is on a fixed income, we are always worried there is going to be yet another new charge for something and that is a little nerve racking. Overall we are happy with Atria especially compared to other communities in the area.

  • If you develop a special diet need, you're out.

I was the Health Care POA for my aunt who was a resident in the memory care section in 2018. A few weeks after moving in, a physical therapist noted that she was having some trouble swallowing, and recommended a modified diet. We were told that Atria could not accommodate a special diet. I would have like to have been advised of this before entering a contract. She went to the hospital for swallowing evaluation among other things and never returned because she couldn’t get the food preparation that she needed. She was only there a month and it cost $14k. If you are only there a month, one should at least get the "community fee" returned. During that month I got regular health updates from therapists who came in from the outside. I never got a call from the Atria nursing staff. It looked like a great place but I conclude that is only the case if you don’t have any special issues. I had high hopes for Atria and was very disappointed.
