Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer organized social events and apartment style housing as well as individual assistance. Assisted living communities frequently offer assistance with appointments and transportation, supervision of care, and opportunities for social activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, “aging in place”, or hospice. The state of Wisconsin has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and these meals must meet residents special dietary needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include leisure time activities, transportation, information and referral, and independent living skills. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These include: first-aid, standard precautions, reporting abuse, and medication management. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
