An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers supervision, assistance, and care to medically stable seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently provide supervision of care, help with appointments and transportation, and opportunities for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or hospice. Wisconsin has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include behavior management, transportation, including personal care, and supervision. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include medication management, provision of personal care, standard precautions, and needs assessment of prospective residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, and these meals must meet residents special dietary needs. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
