Assisted living communities provide oversight, care, and social events to people who are on average 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually provide care supervision, support with the activities of daily life, and chances for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, respite, or hospice. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) governs this community type. Staff must receive education in a number of fields. These areas include basic training (70 hours), nurse delegation and core diabetes, specialty training, and orientation (2 hours). This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of health care treatments, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, communities choose to provide certain health support services, and general responsibility for each resident. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES). Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, level of personal care needs, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , and activities and service preferences. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, practitioner, and not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration provided through nurse delegation, resident self-administration of medication, and medication administration. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room.
