Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer healthcare, oversight, and social interaction to individuals who are on average 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities frequently provide care supervision, aid with transportation and appointments, and chances for organized activity. In certain instances, communities may provide continuing care, dementia care, or respite. Texas has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, a comprehensive assessment , and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-administer their own medication, listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, and obtaining medications from a pharmacy. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, activity and/or social program for residents, and supervision or direct administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: resident characteristics (including dementia), confidentiality, skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, and accessibility requirements. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS.
