Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer social events, supervision, and personal care to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The services provided often involve aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In some instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. Texas has specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities supervises this community type. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of areas. These include: financial management, resident characteristics (including dementia), skills for working with residents, and confidentiality. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, general supervision or oversight, activity and/or social program for residents, and supervision or direct administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, obtaining medications from a pharmacy, and supervision of a resident’s medication regimen.
