Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, supervision, and healthcare to individuals who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often offer chances for organized activity, help with the activities of daily life, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, “aging in place”, or respite. Texas has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities governs this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. Staff are required to receive education in a number of areas. These include: basic principles of management, resident characteristics (including dementia), confidentiality, and skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, supervision or direct administration of medications, personal care, and general supervision or oversight. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with taking medications, reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, and supervision of a resident’s medication regimen.
