Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care to persons who may require help with things such as dressing or cooking meals. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with appointments and transit, supervision of care, and outings for social activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, skilled nursing, or respite. South Carolina maintains specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, assistance with ADLs for the resident, dietary needs, and requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 3 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication assistance, transportation, at least one structured recreation activity each day, and assistance with ADLs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for designated staff members/volunteers to ensure that there is a certified staff member/volunteer present whenever residents are in the community, Basic first-aid, Care of persons specific to the physical/mental condition being cared for in the community, and medication management including storage, administration, receiving orders, securing medications, interactions, and adverse reactions.. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor blood sugar levels, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and administer routine medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs.
