Assisted Living

Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and assistance to seniors who might require a helping hand with everyday activities such as self-administering medication or dressing. The services offered often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain cases, communities may offer skilled nursing care, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of South Carolina maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor blood sugar levels, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and administer routine medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include at least one structured recreation activity each day, medication assistance, transportation, and assistance with ADLs. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 3 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, dietary needs, recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, and assistance with ADLs for the resident. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These include: Basic first-aid, procedures for checking and recording vital signs, use of restraints , and occupational safety and health administration standards regarding blood-borne pathogens.
