Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as personalized assistance. Assisted living communities usually provide supervision of care, support with the activities of daily life, and opportunities for leisurely activity. In select situations, communities may offer skilled nursing care, hospice, or dementia care. South Carolina has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing supervises this community type. There is a maximum occupancy of 3 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: Confidentiality of resident information and records and review of the Bill of Rights for Long-Term Care communities., Care of persons specific to the physical/mental condition being cared for in the community, Basic first-aid, and management/care of persons with contagious and/or communicable disease. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication assistance, transportation, assistance with ADLs, and at least one structured recreation activity each day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, monitor blood sugar levels, and administer routine medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as dietary needs, recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, and requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers.
