Assisted living communities offer healthcare, social events, and supervision to people around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities often provide aid with the activities of daily life, opportunities for recreational activity, and assistance with appointments and transit. In certain cases, communities may offer hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or nursing care. Ohio maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, reminders, and verifying labels. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, intermittent nursing services, personal care, and assistance with self-administration of medication. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: securing emergency assistance, job responsibilities, community procedures, and residents rights. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, medical diagnoses, psychical history, and functional status assessment.
