Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as individual support. The services offered often include support with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. The state of Ohio has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health regulates this type of community. Staff must obtain training in a variety of areas. These areas include residents rights, community procedures, securing emergency assistance, and job responsibilities. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, functional status assessment, medication review, and psychological history. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. These provisions include observation, handing medications to resident, and assistance opening and taking medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medication, medication administration, supervision, and intermittent nursing services.
