Assisted living communities offer coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individualized help. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with the activities of daily life, chances for leisurely activity, and aid with transit and appointments. In select instances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include social work services, assist with personal care, dietary services, and limited nursing care. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as routines and preferences, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a level of care assessment, and a health care assessment. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and provide three meals a day. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These include: pain management, infection control/prevention, assisted living concepts, and Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care.
