Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individual assistance. Assisted living communities frequently offer supervision of care, opportunities for social activity, and support with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, hospice, or continuing care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has specific regulations related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and provide three meals a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, administer medication, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a health care assessment, a level of care assessment, nursing needs, and plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of fields. These include: Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, abuse and neglect, infection control/prevention, and assisted living concepts. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include recreational activities, pharmaceutical services, assist with personal care, and social work services. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports.
