Assisted living communities provide oversight, personal care, and social events to persons who are about 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually provide chances for social activity, help with daily activities, and aid with appointments and transit. In some situations, communities may provide respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. The state of Nebraska maintains specific rules related to this type of community. Nebraska Division of Public Health, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Licensure and Regulation governs this type of community. Staff must receive education in a number of areas. These areas include financial management, rules/regulations/standards for operating an ALF, resident care/services, and administration. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must offer written menus based on federal nutrition standards, monitor for nutritional problems on specified weight changes, and provide adequate food services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as services for residents with special needs and services provided by the community: how often, when and by who. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include case management, housekeeping/laundry, supportive services, and assistance with Addles. Public assistance is available through Government assistance is covered through two Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs..
